Cow | Deer

Cow | Deer is an experiment in sound lead performance, using only live foley and field recordings to evoke the lives of two animals - a cow and a deer.

Oracle Song

Initiated through Sound and Music’s New Voices programme, this multi-part vocal performance uses sound, music and language to explore the human connection with non-human species. A staged presentation of the music was presented at the Barbican Pit Theatre in March 2025, as part of FuelFest.
<img width="3442" height="1886" width_o="3442" height_o="1886" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/cdc56db10cae3c6120ac1100f7edcc90420fc9e0f6df107a32095f6e382ea03d/Screenshot-2026-02-26-at-12.24.15.png" data-mid="246544142" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/cdc56db10cae3c6120ac1100f7edcc90420fc9e0f6df107a32095f6e382ea03d/Screenshot-2026-02-26-at-12.24.15.png" />
Composed through dialogue between a neural net and a vocal ensemble, the project imagines a form of inter-species communion, through creation of a hybrid human/animal vocality. This unique sonic encounter connects listeners to an expanded understanding of non-human life and intelligence, and the intimate sensation of our precarious co-existence.

Old Maids

This piece is part of SoundEscapes,
a series of commissions by the Sainsbury Centre and Sound and Music.
Composed to accompany ‘Old Maids’ by Leonora Carrington, the piece creates a sonic encounter with the imagined story of the painting. Inspired by the wit and strange poetry of Carrington’s vision, it listens to the voices and figures within the painting, and sings its themes of human/animal co-existence and subversive female ageing for the viewer.

Featuring the voices of Kate Huggett, Melanie Pappenheim and Rose Stachniewska.

Dreaming Species

Dreaming Species is a listening experience for headphones in three parts, first launched in 2024. It imagines a world in which the human connection with animals begins to re-tune, using the shared processes of human memory and machine learning.

<img width="9922" height="7016" width_o="9922" height_o="7016" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/70b28d7735bcd6290479262f95ccf66e81ec3b4e811fb1070bf3490a0342bc41/DS-A3-Landscape.jpg" data-mid="210099646" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/70b28d7735bcd6290479262f95ccf66e81ec3b4e811fb1070bf3490a0342bc41/DS-A3-Landscape.jpg" />

Across three episodes, this dream-like piece embarks on a journey into a world in which human connection to animals is re-imagined using the processes of machine learning. To engage with the crisis of biodiversity loss in the UK, Wilson collaborated with an AI neural net, using the voices of animals at risk of extinction and human voices, creating a new sonic language.

Combining multi-part vocal music, animal and machine voice, text and binaural recording techniques, Dreaming Species is the opening creative chapter of a multi-year research process, in which Wilson has explored the possibilities of machine learning to imagine new sonic meeting grounds for human and animal narratives.

background
Wilson collaborated with PRiSM (Practice Research in Science and Music) at RNCM, Manchester, to create the machine-generated voice in this project. She also collaborated with singers Peyee Chen, Adey Grummet, Simone Ibbet-Brown and Melanie Pappenheim to create elements of the music through improvisation.

This work was funded by Arts Council, England and created as part of
Sound and Music’s New Voices programme, of which Melanie was a 2020/21
selected composer.
Following this, Dreaming Species enters its next chapter on stage as Oracle: a new live music performance for six voices, live electronics and projection premiering in 2025.

three tongues

three rooms
three bodies curled in the dark

listening to a hole in the world...

A chamber opera created by Samantha Fernando and Melanie Wilson for Glyndebourne,
exploring the experience of loneliness.
Three isolated voices find their way towards each other, charting a
journey from emotional and social fragmentation to connection and
meaning. Rooted in three contemporary experiences of loneliness – a
young woman finding her identity, a refugee searching for stability and
an older man living with grief and cognitive decline – the work explores
the forces that separate us from each other and the threads we follow
to join back together again.

Radical Mother

Radical Mother is a participatory music project that combines contemporary multi-vocal singing, improvisation, electronic sound, poetic and verbatim text.

This ongoing conversation project began in 2018, and combines climate research,
environmental philosophy, singing and sound, together with input from its
audience, to build an evolving manifesto in response to the crisis in our
natural world.
At the heart of the project is the concept of kinship and
parenthood. Can we extend our understanding of those human experiences beyond
immediate family, species and gender norms, and build a more just future society for each
other and our biosphere?

<img width="6720" height="4480" width_o="6720" height_o="4480" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/d4cab91fec454fa95634088da4462e4f539e60e31070ee4321ee194eeadfb582/Live-Long---Die-Out---improvising.jpg" data-mid="31409432" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/d4cab91fec454fa95634088da4462e4f539e60e31070ee4321ee194eeadfb582/Live-Long---Die-Out---improvising.jpg" />

The ideas for the project are founded on
Melanie’s ongoing explorations in ecology, feminism and the
future, drawing on contemporary theories of compassion and community from education (Jem Bendell), political theory (William Ophuls), eco-feminism (Donna Harraway),
ecology (Dark Mountain) and climate&nbsp; research. Melanie collaborated with environmental psychologist Dr. Stuart Capstick (Cardiff University) on the
project, who studies human behaviour in relation to climate change.

Women of Record

Women of Record is a soundwork for headphones in seven parts, which showed at Knole House as part of A Woman's Place exhibition in 2018. The exhibition commissioned six contemporary art works that highlighted the progression towards women’s equality from Lubaina Himid, CJ Mahoney, Emily Speed, Lindsay Seers, Alice May Williams and Melanie Wilson.

Melanie’s sound work takes inspiration from the lives of Lady Anne Clifford and Lady Frances Cranfield, both residents of Knole. It invites connections between their experiences as 17th century women and the lives of contemporary British women, using Knole as the thread. The piece voices extracts from Cranfield’s letters and Clifford’s autobiography, placing them alongside first person accounts of women today; women whose experiences echo or answer those of Anne and Frances.

Weaving three dimensional sound recordings together with an original score and multi-layered narrative, this richly detailed sound piece connects the listener to Knole as a witness to the progressive spirit of female endurance across time, and the legacy that presses on.

Opera for the Unknown Woman

Opera for the Unknown Woman is an opera poem, created by Melanie Wilson (UK) with co-composer Katarina Glowicka

dream of Earth in the 21st and 22nd centuries, seen through the eyes of its
women and visitors from the far future, fusing contemporary classical and

‘Demanding work
is seen as anathema to the accessibility, entertainment and instant
gratification deemed necessary to attract and placate audiences. But I resist
that, and so does Melanie, committing herself instead to sculpting new forms
for performance, and creating space for different stories about women. It's
certainly a song for action, though, for global feminism to unify against the
patriarchal structures that are relentlessly destroying life on earth.'&nbsp;
Maddy Costa, journalist and blogger on Opera
for the Unknown Woman
‘The piece’s ambitious attempt, it seems to me, is to enable a different mode of conversation. to harness a different form of attention to what it goes without saying are vastly important ideas. And it seems to be trying to perform the alternative way of being that it proposes - to inhabit a space that’s simultaneously powerful and gentle, clear and complex.' Total Theatre
